The Ronald McDonald House . . . A Home Away From Home

We are very grateful to the Heart of Carolina Street Rodders who have supported the Ronald McDonald House with their annual Rod Run for 18 years!  One of the most special rooms at the House is named in honor of this club because of their ongoing generous support.  It is the kitchen, which is the “heart of the House.”  Here families often meet at the end of difficult days and offer support for each other.  All attendees at the annual Rod Run are supporting the Ronald McDonald House families by their participation, so thank you!  We would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little about the House and what your support means to the families we serve.

The Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem provides a “home away from home” for families of children who are receiving medical care in our community’s hospitals.  The House and Family Room programs offer physical comforts, emotional support, education, and referral services designed to promote the well-being of the whole family. 

At the House, families from outside the community whose children are receiving medical treatment at local medical facilities are provided temporary lodging. Cheerful bedrooms, recreation areas indoors and out, and a kitchen stocked with food for all provide for the physical needs of the guests.  A caring staff and the Family Assistance Program offer support and encouragement.  Families are asked to pay $5.00 each night for their room and they stay free of charge if they are unable to pay that amount.   

At the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, located in Brenner Children’s Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center, the services offered at the House are extended by providing a place for parents to take a break from the bedside of the hospitalized child.  Visitors to the Family Rooms can enjoy a snack in the kitchen, relax in one of the seating areas, or use the computers to keep in touch with family and friends.  At the Family Rooms, staff, volunteers, and fellow guests provide families with much-needed support.  There is no charge for families to use the Family Rooms.      

Payment from guest families at the House constitutes only about 2% of the annual operating budget.  Of the operating funds, about 56% come from individuals, businesses, civic groups, church groups, and foundations.  Donations from the N.C. McDonald’s franchise owners total 6% of the operating funds.  Other funds come from special fundraisers conducted by the House.
